Senior Adults
Dawn Patrol
(Patricipants are welcome to join at any time.)
Dawn Patrol studies selected books written by Christian authors to help expand their knowledge and understanding of the church and its working and for participants to become better Christians and servants of Jesus Christ.
Dawn Patrol is open to all men who enjoy coffee, doughnuts, and fellowship. Although the Dawn Patrol studies selected books, it also is an open forum where discussions vary with what is occurring in world events. These discussions sometimes consume the entire meeting hour. The current study is "The Radical Disciple " by John Stott. The Dawn Patrol is led by Reverend Matthew Smith, Associate Pastor at JWUMC, and meets on Wednesday mornings in the Administration Building at 7:30 a.m. in Room A106.
History - The John Wesley United Methodist Church Dawn Patrol started in October 1984 when Dick Odehnal and Reverend Bruce Felker called the first meeting. The need was for fellowship and stimulating study (conversation). Also, there was a need to pray together for the church for its growth in terms of members and ministry, for strength together and for individual persons facing crises in health, job or family changes and the experience of grief whatever the loss. Early on it was clear there were significant differences in thinking within the group and a healthy respect for each other with those differences. The group gave everyone there a sense of acceptance and safety to be candid and open in expressing their ideas. The fist two books studied were 1) a book of meditation and prayers, The Faithing Oak, by Reverend Bob Raines and 2) a book of sermons by Reverend Fredrick Beuchner, The Magnificent Defeat. For quite awhile the group gave Rev. Felker the task to select the book for study and he tried to select provocative writers who, while representing new ideas that pushed the “comfort zone” theologically, also nurtured a deepening sense of faith once given, a trust particularly in the Biblical witness.
