Phil Hooper Director of Music & Fine Arts
Phil Hooper has been the Director of Music at John Wesley UMC since 1988. During his time, members of the Chancel Choir have toured in the UK, Spain, Portugal, and Hungary, and have also been privileged to sing twice in Carnegie Hall! In addition, the chancel choir has sung at two Annual Conferences.
Phil studied with Choral greats Robert Shaw and Donald Nuen making his solo debut with the Atlanta Symphony while a senior in High School.
Phil studied at Shorter College, Georgia State University and Mercer University, Atlanta.
Phil started his church music career at age 12, having his own church music ministry and choirs by age 17. He has served at churches in Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Serving in the following organizations in his career including: Chorister’s Guild (Vice president and President Houston Chapter), Fellowship of United Methodists in Worship Arts (President Texas Annual Conference and Regional Representative 2 terms), and has served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Conference Choir Clinic since 1993 and serving as Dean in 1998 and 1999.
